Ever gone on a wild goose chase when you missed a number or two of a puzzle cache? Want to make sure you're going to the right place before you start?

CoyoteRed wrote a slick little application that gives you a URL to paste into your puzzle cache page that gives finders a link to check their coordinates. It's based on a hash code so nothing is stored, nothing can be cracked and it has a security code you must enter. He gave us permission to offer it to you guys.

To create one for your cache (or just test it), go to http://www.nmgeocaching.com/check.php and enter the cache name and coordinates. It generates a link code you paste into your cache page.

I created a fake cache called test with coordinates of N35 05.555 W106 25.555 , click here and enter the coordinates to see how it works:

Click here to check your answer

It's here, it's functional (but not pretty yet) and anyone is welcome to use it.

Changed the clickable link text

I get a security check fail every time.

Address no longer needed.

Thanks!

Hmmm, I plugged in some bad coordinates and got....

? TRG N WBO!! ?

? GCR0ZC ?

N 35? 25.555 W 106? 25.000

Incorrect

Your coordinates are not correct. Please check your work and try again later.

Try refreshing the entry page. I tried to re-use one by just going back to it and had to refresh the page to get a new security code.

I had tried that several times. I think I have isolated the problem.

The first time I submitted the coordinates to create the check, I had made a mistake on the coordinates. So I resubmitted it with the correct coordinates.

I refreshed this time holding down the ctrl key and get a full refresh. Tried good and bad coords and it is working. Thanks!

I even checked my coordinates for Ditch Witch. Now I'm going to go find it! Thanks for putting this together! I hope more people use it! I could really use it to check the second stage of Oh, So Sweet.

When I cut and paste this into my edited cache page, it does not create a hyperlink. Plus I inadvently starting creating a New Waypoint (with FINAL and some prefix, etc. which I don't think is necessary) and now I can't get rid of the New Waypoint stuff on my cache page. Look at Altura Park Revisited (GCRMV1). Bill

Hey, welcome Bill! Altura Park looks OK now, I don't see any extra waypoints. You're right, you have to check "descriptions below are in HTML". Other than that, it's just a matter of pasting the code into your page, you don't have to modify or add anything else.

I noticed when converting a cache page to html it ignores paragraph spacing. To restore the break, edit your text and insert a <p> where the paragraph break is supposed to be. Hope that makes sense, that's the html command for a paragraph break.

Hang in there, I know there are lots of us that would love to have this on your caches.

I successfully placed this in 5 or 6 of my puzzle caches, but for Netherwood Park and Ridgecrest Park Plus I keep getting Security Check Failed over and over again. I tried refreshing several times and typing in different 5 number sequences all to no avail. Could you please try the Netherwood coordinates ? Enter xxxxxxx We can erase this later ! Thanks very much,

Bill

Yes, that gave me success. However, when I cut and pasted the above instruction into the geocaching edited page and performed the test there, it continues to give me the same error. I don't understand what is going on !

I think we're running into CoyoteRed's security regimen, he's pretty strict. I know the link I gave you works so copy it to your clipboard and completely exit out of your browser then re-open your browser and try it again.

That did the trick, Bruce. Thanks very much. By the way in that series of 5 number you must enter, sometimes there is a zero with a slash through it and sometimes just a plain zero. Are these all numbers and not letters ?

They are all numbers. I'd like them to be a little more recognizable too, but they are there to prevent hacking.

It's sad we have to go so far out of our way to foil the 1% that won't play by the rules.

With a little help from my friends (aka Bruce !), I have now modified all my multicache puzzles so that you can check the final coordinates. Of course, the exact numbers somewhat depend upon how you do the calculations ! You can always check with me using the old-fashioned email approach.

Welcome to the board, EMC! Drop by now and then to see what's going on.

Thanks for the kudos on the coordinate checker and you're more than welcome to use it. It gets traffic from all over. Canadians especially use the heck out of it.
